Dr. Rick Wadsworth is a self-funded homeless advocate specializing in educating the public & policy-makers concerning the causes & solutions of homelessness. His ongoing man-on-the-street interviews with these marginalized people has given him a unique perspective into the underbelly of society at the lowest levels and given him a drive & purpose to help effect change. Rick's own son was homeless for 3 years along with friends whose lives are similarly affected by it. Understanding the causes of homelessness (which are many) is key to seeing the problem accurately from a compassionate, human-capital, strength-based approach. Holistic healing--utilizing a Salutogenic approach--will change minds, heal hearts, shape thinking, strengthen relationships, and create change at the public & policy level if implemented properly (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salutogenesis). Three groups needs to be educated but in different ways: 1) First, the homeless need to be taught life-skills, addiction-recovery principles, self-compassion & forgiveness, how to reconnect with others along with their own Higher Power, and how to regulate thoughts & feelings as they continue to face insurmountable physical, emotional, and social pain daily 2) Second, the public needs to understand their plight as well as how to help them in the most strategic & effective ways (and that resource distribution is only a start). Through education, the public needs to realize that many of their 'private' lives ironically mirror the 'public' lives of those they see on the streets. 3) Third, politicians (state, federal, local, including the police & other civil servants) need to learn that merely providing shelter--without full wrap around services--will not lead to change but failure because thinking & behavior modification is not being addressed adequately. Until thinking changes, nothing changes. "Giving out fishes" (free meals & housing) instead of teaching "how to fish" is the key to long-term success. Charities are doing many wonderful, meaningful things by providing food, clothing, and limited shelters (along with occasional showers); Some government programs are trying to provide shelter & food stamps--but no one is addressing the educational component that creates lasting change. As an educator for 28 years and a content creator, Rick understands every aspect of effective teaching and how to engage interest & understanding through variety and non-traditional pedagogies. Rick has worked as a volunteer at the Oregon State Penitentiary for 3 years, along with veterans and those who identify as LGBTQ+. He is culturally-sensitive and understands loss, has studied addiction & psychology, and has a Master's & Doctorate degree in Education.
